The procedure

Where will the procedure be carried out?

Maastricht UMC+ has carried out PGD procedures since 1995 and is the only centre in the Netherlands which is licensed to perform PGD.

MUMC+ has a partnership agreement with Utrecht UMC, Groningen UMC and Amsterdam AMC. Couples who wish to apply for PGD can obtain more information on the procedure in Utrecht, Groningen or Amsterdam as well as in Maastricht.

The preliminary gynaecological examination and certain parts of the IVF procedure can be carried out in Utrecht, Groningen or Amsterdam as well as in Maastricht.

Preliminary genetic testing and the laboratory tests of the embryonic cells must be carried out at MUMC+. Couples interested in undergoing PGD will have to visit MUMC+ at least once for an intake interview.

Transport PGD

In most cases, the IVF treatments required for PGD and the embryonic biopsy to screen for certain disorders may be administered at Utrecht UMC, Groningen UMC and Amsterdam AMC as well as at MUMC+. Following a biopsy, the retrieved cells will be courier-delivered to MUMC+ for screening, while the embryos themselves will remain in Utrecht, Groningen or Amsterdam. Following PGD testing, MUMC+’s laboratory will inform doctors at Utrecht UMC, Groningen UMC or Amsterdam AMC which embryos can be implanted in the uterus. This procedure is called Transport PGD. Transport PGD yields the same results as PGD carried out at MUMC+.

Satellite PGD

In some cases, certain parts of the IVF procedure may be carried out at Groningen UMC, while follicular puncture and embyronic biopsy to screen for certain disorders will be performed at MUMC+. This procedure is called Satellite PGD. Couples wishing to undergo Satellite PGD will have to come to Maastricht on the day preceding follicular puncture. Accommodation within walking distance of MUMC+ is available.
