I.B. Mathijssen is a clinical geneticist working at the Amsterdam UMC’s Clinical Genetics department. She studied medicine at Amsterdam VU University and trained to become a clinical geneticist at Amsterdam UMC. Her job in the PGD team is to counsel people who are considering undergoing PGD. In addition, she provides afflicted couples who seek to have children with information on hereditary diseases and focuses on prenatal diagnosis, chromosome abnormalities and male infertility – three fields which conveniently partially overlap. One of her main objectives is to ensure that people make decisions which are appropriate in their circumstances and which they will not come to regret.
