International collaboration

Since it has always striven to improve and standardise PGD activities, Maastricht UMC+’s Clinical Genetics Unit has sought collaboration with leading overseas PGD centres from its inception.

Back in the early years, MUMC+’s main collaborators were the Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK, where the world’s first PGD procedure was performed in 1989 under the supervision of Prof. Robert Winston and Dr Alan Handyside, and the Academic Medical Centre of the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, under the supervision of Professors André van Steirteghem and Inge Liebaers.

In 1998, MUMC+’s collaboration with the Brussels PGD Centre, which is one of the largest and most pre-eminent PGD centres in Europe, was formalised, resulting in a diagnostic and scientific partnership agreement. In 2006 the Strassbourg PGD Centre in France, currently led by dr. Céline Moutou, joined the partnership.
